Роман-эпопею «Война и мир» Лев Толстой писал на протяжении шести лет, с 1863 по 1869 год. Свое крупнейшее произведение он вручную переписывал 8 раз, а некоторые эпизоды — около 26, притом что рукописный фонд четырехтомника — более 5 тысяч листов. Несмотря на огромный успех романа, сам писатель скептически относился к своему сочинению: спустя пару лет после окончания романа в письме Афанасию Фету он писал: «Как я счастлив… что писать дребедени многословной вроде «Войны» я больше никогда не стану».
