Михаил Лермонтов начал писать роман «Герой нашего времени» под впечатлением от первой ссылки на Кавказ в 1837 году. В печати произведение появлялось по частям — в журнале «Отечественные записки» выходили отдельные повести с подзаголовком «Из записок офицера о Кавказе». Полное издание романа впервые появилось в 1840 году.

«Бэла» — первая повесть из лермонтовского романа. После ее опубликования критик Виссарион Белинский в своей статье отметил, что «проза Лермонтова достойна его высокого поэтического дарования».
