При жизни Михаил Лермонтов печатался редко: он был слишком требовательным к своим стихотворениям. Лермонтов выпустил первый и единственный сборник произведений в 1840 году. Основной мотив лермонтовской лирики — мотив одиночества. Лирический герой, противостоящий обществу, бунтует, а потому оказывается одинок. Стихотворения Михаила Лермонтова отличаются мелодичностью и эмоциональной насыщенностью. Виссарион Белинский писал в статье «Стихотворения М. Лермонтова»: «Бросая общий взгляд на стихотворения Лермонтова, мы видим в них все силы, все элементы, из которых слагается жизнь и поэзия. В этой глубокой натуре, в этом мощном духе все живет; им все доступно, все понятно; они на все откликаются».
